What is “Facebook Home” app?
Don’t search any longer for your Facebook app, is a promise that Facebook makes with its users. Instead, get a phone enabled with “Facebook Home” – An all new app or an app launcher that comes packaged for now with select HTC and Samsung phones. The “Facebook Home” is at the forefront of an android base phone. The moment your Facebook Home phone starts up, it asks you to login with your Facebook credentials. The main screen keeps on displaying cover feed, complete with status updates, full-screen images from your network, and notifications too. The phone introduces a new concept called “Chat Heads”. They appear on your home screen as a single bubble representing a Facebook user in your network. You can easily click on his chat head to comment on photos and other updates, or also join a conversation. Videos are not currently a part of Facebook Home. However, it might come along a little later.
Android users having Facebook Home have an option of closing Facebook Home down too and continue with the regular Android experience. The application promises to increase your time spent on Facebook. Clearly it’s disruptive. You no longer need to search for a Facebook App on your phone, but you have it right at the top.
Though currently offered on select phones from Samsung and HTC, Facebook promises to roll the “Home” application with other phones as well.
How travel businesses can use “Facebook Home” app for travel marketing?
Now if you are a part of the travel fraternity, what does this new piece of technology mean for you?
Travel Marketers: A research by Flurry Analytics recently shared that out of 100% time spent on iOS and Android devices, users spent 18% (largest share) of their time on the Facebook App in their phones (In total, they spent 80% of their time on apps).
With “Facebook Home” now on the top of your android phone (and iOS in coming days maybe), clearly Facebook will now get more attention per user which in turn means that marketers can no longer neglect Facebook from their digital media strategy.
Also remember, that the photos from your social network will now be visible full screen on the phone, which means your travel brand gets increased visibility.
Advertising on “Facebook Home” app
Facebook has confirmed that advertising is very well on its way to Facebook Home! According to a research by emarketer Facebook will drive in over $1 bn in revenues this year.
The idea of being able to look at an advertisement the moment you unlock your phone is quite interesting.
This idea about Facebook Home is indeed disruptive. For the travel fraternity, Facebook Home (and the advertising that might come up on it ) addresses one of the oldest challenges in online advertising , that of getting the attention of the user at the right place and the right time . Pushing personalized, relevant travel offering to users, when they have just landed in a foreign country and are thinking of heading out to look for a taxi, a hotel or just an activity for the evening, would get the travel agent a customer with a genuine need and future loyalty as well. But everything said and done, the ultimate success of Facebook Home would clearly depend on whether users want to engage themselves even more into an immersive Facebook experience? Personally to me, the idea of being able to look at an amazing travel deal on my phone screen as I have my sandwich during the lunch break is quite exciting!
